Welcome back to our Lawrence School families after what we hope has been a restful and relaxing summer. A special welcome also goes out to families new to Lawrence School this year. We anticipate an exciting and productive school year ahead of us. Working together, we will make The Lawrence School the best it can be for our students, staff, and parent community. We look forward to getting to know all of our new students and their families during this school year. We anticipate the 2017-2018 school year to be a memorable one for all of us.

“Discipline is a shared responsibility between home and school.”:

This is stated in the Middletown Public Schools Elementary Parent and Student Handbook. We will not hesitate at any time to ask for your assistance and cooperation to ensure that our students meet our behavioral expectations at Lawrence School. Our primary goal is that our students respect each other and treat one another with fairness and kindness. We will continue to strive to teach our students the skills to resolve conflicts peacefully with one another. This year, our school will continue to implement the PAWS Program in all classrooms as an initiative to support our students' positive social development. We will also commend students for their positive behavior at monthly “Student of the Month” celebrations.

School Hours:

School officially begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. Please make every effort to see that your child has arrived to school by 8:50. On Parent Conference and Elementary Professional Development Days, the students are dismissed at 1:15 p.m.On one session days the students are dismissed at 1:15 p.m.Please note that all parents/guardians picking up their children after school must report to the cafeteria. Children will not be dismissed unless parents/guardians ENTER the building. It is our top priority to keep our children safe. Please be on time for dismissal at 3:25 p.m.

Speak with your child's teacher:

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's educational program, please speak with your child's teacher. Your child's teacher will do likewise. Our students must know that there is a strong partnership between home and school in order to ensure their academic and social success at Lawrence School. It is not a good time for teachers to have meaningful conversations with parents/guardians while students are arriving and leaving school. Teachers need this time to attend to students, and each one of their individual needs. Please call to schedule a mutually convenient time to meet with your child's teacher. Thank you for your cooperation.

Notes after an absence:

Please send a note to school when your child returns after an absence. We would greatly appreciate your calling the school to report an absence before school hours. Please do so by calling the school office and leaving a message on the answering machine (860-632-2158).

Bus Safety Expectations:

Bus safety expectations are outlined in the Middletown Public Schools Elementary Handbook. All students are expected to follow these expectations to ensure that all students arrive to school safely and arrive home safely at the end of the school day. You will be notified of any concerns that might arise regarding your child's conduct on the school bus.

Dismissal of Children:

Please send a note to your child's teacher if your child is being dismissed for an appointment prior to 3:25 p.m. or if there is a change in transportation. Please come directly to the office and indicate to the secretary or staff member on duty that the child/children are being signed out early. Identification may be requested. Your child/children will also report to the office. Please park in the designated spaces in the parking lot.


All parents and visitors must sign in at the office and receive a visitor's pass before entering any section of the building. Only the front entrance of the building may be used for entry. This entrance will be monitored by a video camera and is opened once the bell has been rung and you have identified yourself. Only Lawrence Staff and students are allowed on the playgrounds before school and during recess, unless the parent is wearing a visitor badge and has signed in at the office.

Parent Pick-Up/Drop-Off:

Please observe the Parent Pick-Up/Drop-Off signs and arrows to the far end of the building when dropping off or picking up your child/children during school hours. There is to be no parking directly in front of the school building during the hours of 8:20 - 9:15 a.m. and 3:00-3:50 p.m. During these times, the school buses are arriving at Lawrence School to drop off or pick up our students during arrival/dismissal times. Parent Pick-up is at 3:25 p.m. in the cafeteria. All parents must enter the cafeteria to pick up their children to avoid any unsafe situations that might occur in the parking lot. Students will not exit the building without an adult and no child will be allowed to walk to a car in the parking lot without a parent/guardian. Please be on time to pick up your child. Your cooperation is most appreciated with this matter.

Flow of Traffic:

When dropping off children in the morning, please drive into the main parking lot and drop off your child at the designated drop off area. Signs and arrows are posted in the parking lot. It is extremely critical for the safety of our school community that you obey all the signs and arrows daily. Please be careful not to block others from exiting the parking lot or parking in the spaces. Cars are not allowed in the front driveway because this area is reserved for the school buses and vans.

Appropriate Attire for Students:

Appropriate dress is expected at all times including safe shoes that are securely fastened. No abbreviated clothing or hats are to be worn in the building.

*Shorts and skirts no shorter than 2” above the knee are suggested.
*No shirts with the mid-section showing may be worn.
*No flip-flops may be worn.

We want our children to be comfortable in school, but we do not wish for a child's attire to be distracting or take away from the learning process. Please be sure that your child is wearing sneakers when he/she has Physical Education for a Special.

Student Possessions:

We ask that our students refrain from bringing in radios, tape/cd players, electronic games, or other valuable items as they are disruptive to the learning environment and they can be easily stolen and/or broken. If an item is taken away from a student, we ask that an adult come to school to pick it up.

School Cancellations or Delays:

In the event of inclement weather, school cancellations or delays will be announced on the following radio and televisions stations: WTIC, WMRD, WDRC, KISS 95.7, WELI, Country 92.5, Channel 8, and Channel 30. This information will also be posted on the district's website -

Please do not call the regular school number. This line must remain open for emergencies.

Parent Conferences:

Parent Conferences have been scheduled for November 29, 30 and December 1, 2017 and March 14, 15 and 16, 2018. The students' Progress Reports and Portfolios for the first and second trimesters will be reviewed at these conferences. Students will be dismissed beginning at 1:15 p.m. on these days. Information regarding the scheduling of conferences will be sent home well in advance of the planned conference days.

Meeting Place in the Event of an Emergency:

In the event of an emergency where the students need to vacate The Lawrence School premises, we will gather at Keigwin School on Spruce Street, a few blocks away. The students may need to walk to this facility and will be accompanied by all staff. A member of the school staff will be on hand at the facility to assist in the communication of information regarding The Lawrence School students.
